چکیده
Catalyst layer defects and irregularities in catalyst-coated membrane (CCM) electrodes affect the lifetime of polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEMFCs) during their operation. Thus, catalyst are important concerns for cell manufacturers prompt development quality control systems with aim fabricating defect-free electrodes. Consequently, objective this study is to gain a fundamental understanding morphological changes real that have developed CCM production. In paper, missing (MCLD) formed decal transfer process investigated through nondestructive method using reflected light microscopy. The geometric features quantified, growth measured at regular time intervals from beginning-of-life (BOL) end-of-life (EOL) until OCV has dropped by 20% its initial value as per DOE-designed protocol. Overall, two types degradation observed: surface caused erosion crack mechanical deformation. Furthermore, were found exhibit higher rate middle-of-life (MOL-1) stabilize EOL. This type will provide baseline information allow them select reject CCMs, ultimately increasing stacks.

Reduced models for the cathode catalyst layer in PEM fuel cells
Abstract: We study a pore scale model for the catalyst layer on the cathode side of a fuel cell, where hydrogen and oxygen combine at catalyst sites. Our model distinguishes microscopically the phases of rigid structure, electrolyte, pore-space, and catalyst. The oxygen concentration and the protonic potential are described by diffusion equations with reaction terms on the catalyst’s surface. F...

A three dimensional, compressible, steady, one phase flow of reactant-product mixture in the air side electrode of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is numerically studied in this paper. The mixture is composed of three species: oxygen, nitrogen and water vapor. The performance of the cell is enhanced by partial blockage of the flow field channels. Various types of these blocks also ca...

Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) efficiently convert the reaction energy of hydrogen and oxygen to electricity, water and heat. The oxygen reduction reaction occurs in composite nanostructured catalyst layers (CL) formed from Pt nanoparticles supported on a network of carbon particle agglomerates. Oxygen reaches the reaction site through diffusion. Understanding the diffusion pro...

متن کاملAn Effective Computational Approach to the Parametric Study of the Cathode Catalyst Layer of PEM Fuel Cells
We propose an integrated modeling, prediction, and analysis framework for the parametric study of the cathode catalyst layer (CCL) of PEM fuel cells. A parametric study is performed on a macro-homogeneous film model of the CCL. An artificial neural network (ANN) is then used in order to model and predict the effect of various structural parameters on the activation overpotential of the CCL. The...
